Initial Thoughts on Mac OSX Lion

Switching to Mac OSX Lion feels like getting a new computer! Almost everything about the OS is different yet everything feels familiar. I think thats one thing Apple is really good at! After performing the upgrade and rebooting, I came across the new login screen which is definitely sleeker than previous versions of Mac OSX. However there was nothing noticeably different after logging in, until it came time to use multiple finger gestures to navigate across desktops. With three fingers down we can scroll through various full screen apps that are running as well as the new Dashboard which feels a lot sleeker!

One thing that stands out with using Lion is its emphasis on full screen apps. Although right now, there aren’t so many apps available that have been fully optimized by Lion, we can see some of the potentials by looking at the new Apple made Lion-optimized-apps like Safari, and Keynote. Working in full screen is definitely exciting. I can imagine that having a smaller macbook will greatly be more manageable now. For the first time, using a 15″ Macbook pro feels too big! Apple has taken what has worked on the iPad and moved it over to their desktop class apps and brought full screen to all their systems!

When the Mac App Store first opened, I remember downloading a few apps to try it out. But I only ended up using it for 2-3 more times and since then it has remained untouched. But with OSX Lion having the entire system built around the Mac App Store, I’m really starting to browse around the App Store a lot more. This is probably the place people will first look for when they are looking to download Lion-Optimized full screen apps! Its definitely a step in the right direction.

One thing I am not really used to right now is the scrolling. Two fingers and scroll down used to be a way to scroll any page down, but now that has been inversed and the opposite direction happens! This is something that I have to get used to, especially since the old habit has been around for 3+ years now!

Distributing OSX Lion over the App Store is going to be a challenge, especially for places where I live in right now, Jakarta Indonesia, where to download a 3gb file is just too much! This will just annoy everyone here and get more people to opt for the easy-to-find pirated version. Thankfully, Apple announced that it will be releasing a USB thumb drive stocked with Mac OSX Lion in the near future. Is this a sign that Apple is completely getting rid of the CD drive on Macs? Its already gone on the Mac Mini and Macbook Air. It won’t be too long till Macbook Pro’s will have no spinning parts (other than the fans of course)!

Like many other reviews for Mac OSX Lion, I think getting this for $29 is a steal! This is definitely an awesome upgrade! I have yet to find any problems or crashing so far!
